introductory statement
water and ice, contained only by the photo-frame -- one of the simplest substances on earth, and one of the most complex -- utterly everyday, utterly essential, always changing, never truly still. Polaroids, pinholes, and toy cameras remind us that its surface is a boundary, so permeable, so see-through, and yet such an absolute separation -- those of us who breath air, need to be on this side, and others must stay below that divide.
